Claude AI unlocks $400K dormant Bitcoin wallet
A Bitcoin holder posting as cprkrn on X said Anthropic’s Claude AI helped recover 5 Bitcoin from a wallet locked for more than 11 years after analysing files from an old college computer.
The user said Claude located an encrypted wallet file, debugged the open-source recovery tool btcrecover, decrypted the wallet’s private keys and converted them into Wallet Import Format after multiple failed attempts with commercial recovery services.
“Last ditch effort dumped my whole college computer into Claude. It found an OLD wallet file that the pneumonic successfully decrypted,”
Posted cprkrn on X.
Screenshots shared online showed Claude identifying how btcrecover concatenated a sharedKey value with the original password during decryption, allowing the private keys to decrypt successfully on the corrected attempt.
The recovery depended on a mnemonic phrase the user said was rediscovered weeks earlier, with the recovered 5 Bitcoin now valued at nearly $400,000 based on Bitcoin’s recent trading price of about $79,622.
The case attracted widespread attention across the cryptocurrency industry, with Nic Carter describing the result as “insane” while crypto journalist Laura Shin and Jesse Pollak also reacted to the recovery online.
The recovery has renewed discussion around the growing use of AI for cybersecurity and technical debugging tasks, while blockchain analytics firm Glassnode estimates that roughly one-third of Bitcoin’s total supply remains dormant in long-inactive wallets.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $79,256.83.
