China joins global anti-scam crackdown in Dubai
China confirmed it participated alongside the United States and United Arab Emirates in a large-scale international operation targeting pig-butchering scam networks operating in Dubai.
The joint crackdown dismantled nine scam centres and resulted in the arrest of 276 suspects allegedly involved in online romance and cryptocurrency investment fraud schemes.
“Chinese police will continue to deepen pragmatic cooperation with more countries, carry out joint crackdowns, thoroughly dismantle telecom fraud dens, and make every effort to apprehend suspects involved in such crimes,”
An official from China’s Ministry of Public Security said.
Authorities said the scam operations targeted victims through fake online relationships before convincing them to invest in fraudulent cryptocurrency opportunities promising high returns.
Federal Bureau of Investigation estimated pig-butchering scams generated nearly $6 billion in losses across the United States during 2024 alone as global losses exceeded $75 billion since 2020.
Law enforcement agencies also linked many scam networks to human trafficking operations, where individuals are allegedly lured to parts of Southeast Asia and forced to conduct fraud schemes under threats of violence or torture.
The operation marked one of the first publicly confirmed anti-pig-butchering collaborations involving Chinese, American and Emirati authorities, potentially signalling broader international enforcement efforts against cryptocurrency-related fraud networks.
