Chainlink lead criticises Ripple Kansas sponsorship

Share
  • Chainlink community lead Zach Rynes criticised Ripple's five-year sponsorship agreement with the University of Kansas and questioned its marketing strategy for XRP.
  • Rynes argued the campaign targets retail investors rather than supporting Ripple's institutional payments business, while XRP supporters rejected the criticism.
  • The debate follows Ripple's expansion of its university partnership and recent regulatory progress in Europe.

Zach Rynes, a community lead for Chainlink (CRYPTO:LINK), criticised Ripple's five-year sponsorship with the University of Kansas, arguing that promoting XRP (CRYPTO:XRP) through college sports does not align with the company's institutional payments business.

The comments followed Ripple's announcement that the XRP logo will appear on Kansas Jayhawks football, basketball and other team uniforms as part of a sponsorship that also includes blockchain and financial education programmes.

“Sponsoring a college sports program with the $XRP logo on the jersey doesn’t make much sense if you think Ripple’s primary business is selling financial technology to banks,” said Zach Rynes.

Rynes also claimed Ripple's business relies on selling XRP to retail investors and argued the company's XRP holdings benefit shareholders, while Ripple has not publicly responded to those specific claims.

The criticism comes shortly after Ripple expanded its partnership with the University of Kansas, and as Ripple is a privately held company there was no share price reaction following the comments.

Ripple has said its agreement with the university builds on an existing relationship that includes an XRP Ledger validator operated by the engineering school and support through the University Blockchain Research Initiative.

Some XRP supporters disputed Rynes' comments on social media, arguing that Ripple's university partnership supports broader adoption and education while also noting Chainlink's current position among leading cryptocurrency projects.

At the time of reporting, Chainlink price was $7.62.
