CFTC taps crypto specialist for derivatives push

Commodity Futures Trading Commission has appointed DJ Hennes as director of its Market Participants Division, reinforcing the agency’s growing focus on crypto assets and prediction markets under Chairman Michael Selig.

The division oversees brokers, swap dealers, fund operators and other intermediaries registered with the CFTC, placing Hennes in charge of compliance examinations, registration oversight and coordination with self-regulatory organisations including the National Futures Association.

“He brings a wealth of experience advising clients across the financial services industry, and his work with crypto assets and prediction markets will be of tremendous value as we seek to future-proof the CFTC’s rules and regulations,”

Selig said.

Hennes joins the regulator from KPMG, where he advised financial institutions on digital asset derivatives compliance, after previously spending 15 years at Promontory Financial Group leading its Americas capital markets business.

The appointment comes as the CFTC advances rulemaking tied to event contracts and prediction markets while also expanding its role in overseeing crypto-linked derivatives products across US financial markets.

“I am honored to be joining the Commission,”

Hennes said.

“I look forward to working with Chairman Selig, his leadership team, and the dedicated staff as we continue the CFTC’s mission of fostering integrity, innovation, and liquidity in our vibrant derivatives markets.”

He added.

The leadership change also reflects the Trump administration’s broader push for clearer digital asset regulation as federal agencies increasingly compete for jurisdiction over crypto trading, derivatives and tokenised financial products.
