House Committee urges Trump to fill CFTC seats
The House Agriculture Committee urged Donald Trump to fill vacant seats at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, warning the agency lacks sufficient leadership to manage its expanding regulatory responsibilities.
Committee Chairman Glenn Thompson and Ranking Member Angie Craig said in a joint letter that the CFTC should operate with a full bipartisan panel of five commissioners rather than relying solely on Chairman Michael Selig.
“The public, the markets, and the agency itself will be best served by a full five-member commission,”
The lawmakers wrote, arguing that broader representation would help produce stronger and more durable regulations.
The request comes as the proposed CLARITY Act advances through Congress and could significantly expand the CFTC’s authority over spot digital commodity trading and cryptocurrency market structure oversight.
Lawmakers warned the legislation would require extensive rulemaking and additional regulatory capacity, particularly because the CFTC currently operates with roughly 543 employees compared with around 4,200 at the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
The committee also noted that rules issued by a single commissioner may face greater legal vulnerability as the agency continues defending lawsuits involving prediction markets and broader jurisdictional disputes with state regulators.
The CFTC has recently pursued legal action against several states over prediction market oversight while also working on policy positions involving non-custodial software developers and digital asset regulation.
