Brunei has entered the northeast monsoon season, which authorities say will continue through March 2026.

The Brunei Meteorological Department confirmed the seasonal shift in its latest rainfall outlook.

January 2026 is forecast to record above-normal rainfall exceeding 440 millimetres nationwide.

February is also expected to see wetter-than-average conditions with rainfall totals above 230 millimetres.

Rainfall in March is projected to remain slightly above normal, ranging between 170 and 200 millimetres.

Meteorologists said the sustained rainfall could significantly raise the risk of flooding across the country.

Low-lying and flood-prone areas are expected to face the highest threat during prolonged downpours.

Communities near riverbanks have been warned to remain alert, especially during periods of high tide.

Sea conditions in Brunei waters are forecast to remain generally slight to moderate throughout the monsoon.

Wave heights are expected to range between 0.8 metres and 1.5 metres.

Authorities warned that heavy rainfall combined with gusty winds could trigger landslides in vulnerable areas.

The public was also cautioned about risks of fallen trees and damage to rooftops during storms.

Officials advised residents to follow weather updates and take early precautionary measures.
