Blockchain Association urges Congress to clarify crypto taxes
- Blockchain Association has urged US congressional leaders to advance bipartisan digital asset tax legislation and launched TaxClarityforAmerica.com.
- The group says 67 million Americans hold and use digital assets, while existing tax rules create uncertainty for taxpayers.
- Its proposals include tax exemptions for small transactions, cash-like treatment for stablecoins and clearer rules for staking rewards.
The Blockchain Association has urged US congressional leaders to advance bipartisan cryptocurrency tax legislation, launching a public campaign for clearer rules.
The industry group sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on 22 October 2026.
“Americans who use digital assets aren't asking for special treatment. They want to follow the law and pay the taxes they owe, but today's rules are often unclear and unworkable,” Blockchain Association Chief Policy Officer Lindsay Fraser said in a statement.
The association also launched TaxClarityforAmerica.com, a website designed to explain digital asset tax policy and help Americans contact their congressional representatives.
Its proposals include a meaningful tax exemption for small digital asset transactions and treating stablecoins as cash for tax purposes.
The framework also recommends taxing mining and staking rewards when users dispose of the assets, alongside clearer treatment for transactions that do not change economic exposure.
The association developed its tax principles with input from more than 100 members and first published the framework in February 2026.
The initiative adds industry pressure for clearer US digital asset tax rules, but congressional leaders have yet to enact the proposals described in the letter.
