Block adds Bitcoin Lightning to x402 payments

Block, Inc. (NYSE:XYZ) has joined the x402 Foundation and contributed Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) Lightning payments to x402.
The open standard enables AI agents and web services to pay autonomously for APIs, data and digital services.
“Bringing Lightning to x402 is a concrete step toward making Bitcoin everyday money for people and the agents acting on their behalf, and we’re excited to help the industry build on it,” according to Steve Lee, head of Block’s Bitcoin development initiative Spiral.
Lightning adds a payment method designed for instant, low-cost and high-volume transactions within x402.
The x402 standard uses HTTP’s 402 Payment Required response to request payments during web transactions.
The standard operates under Linux Foundation governance and remains network and currency agnostic.
Block said Lightning support could expand Bitcoin’s role in everyday, high-volume, low-value payments.
Following the announcement, Block shares were up 2.76% at $76.74.
