Bitcoin miners split over AI data centres
- Some Bitcoin miners are expanding into AI data centres, while others argue the economics and infrastructure requirements remain challenging.
- Major AI hosting agreements have attracted investor interest as Bitcoin mining margins remain under pressure following the latest halving.
- The industry's differing strategies are expected to shape future revenue growth and company valuations.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) miners are increasingly dividing between companies investing in AI data centres and those choosing to remain focused on cryptocurrency mining as lower mining revenues drive demand for alternative income sources.
Companies including TeraWulf, Cipher Mining, Hut 8 and Core Scientific have secured long-term AI infrastructure agreements, while other miners argue converting mining sites into AI facilities requires significant investment and operational changes.
“Mining rigs can run in remote locations with interruptible power sources, while AI inference and training clusters need stable, high-density power delivery and sophisticated cooling systems,” the report said.
TeraWulf has signed a 20-year agreement with Anthropic covering about 401 megawatts of capacity beginning in 2027, while Cipher Mining secured a 15-year agreement with Amazon Web Services valued at about US$5.5 billion.
The AI transition has supported valuations for miners pursuing data centre strategies, while companies focused solely on Bitcoin mining have continued to trade largely in line with Bitcoin price movements.
Industry analysts estimate AI-related services could account for about 70% of public Bitcoin miners' revenue by the end of 2026, compared with about 30% earlier this year, although those forecasts remain subject to successful project execution.
Investors are expected to monitor the rollout of TeraWulf's Anthropic project and Cipher Mining's Amazon Web Services agreement as early indicators of whether Bitcoin mining companies can successfully diversify into AI infrastructure.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $61,858.76.
