Bitcoin kidnap plot organiser faces 20 years
Saif Faiq has pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge connected to a bitcoin-related kidnapping scheme and now faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
US prosecutors said Faiq admitted to conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery after helping organise the abduction of the parents of Veer Chetal, a participant in a major cryptocurrency theft involving roughly 4,100 Bitcoin.
According to the US Department of Justice, Faiq entered his guilty plea in federal court in Connecticut on June 9 and is scheduled to be sentenced on August 28.
Court documents allege that Faiq and his brother, Adam Iza, coordinated a plan in 2024 to kidnap the parents of a crypto millionaire in an effort to extort access to digital assets.
Investigators said Faiq recruited six men from Florida, arranged their travel to Connecticut and helped organise surveillance before the attack, while Adam Iza separately pleaded guilty to the same conspiracy charge on June 1.
Authorities said the group targeted Sushil and Radhika Chetal in Danbury, Connecticut, after deliberately colliding with their Lamborghini Urus before allegedly assaulting and briefly abducting the couple, while the six attackers later pleaded guilty to kidnapping and carjacking offences.
The case is linked to the theft of approximately 4,100 Bitcoin by Veer Chetal and two accomplices, while authorities in France are separately investigating an attempted kidnapping targeting the wife of The Sandbox co-founder Sebastien Borget, highlighting growing security concerns surrounding wealthy cryptocurrency holders.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $63,423.01.
