BitBox adds Lightning wallet without new backup
- BitBox has added a self-custody Lightning wallet to its BitBoxApp.
- Users can recover the Lightning wallet with their existing BitBox backup.
- The wallet supports Lightning payments without requiring users to run nodes or manage channels.
BitBox has added a self-custody Lightning wallet to its BitBoxApp for faster Bitcoin payments.
The wallet uses the existing BitBox backup, so users do not need to record another recovery phrase.
The Lightning wallet keeps spending funds separate from Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) stored on the hardware wallet.
Users can scan Lightning invoices, create invoices, receive payments and move funds between Lightning and on-chain balances.
BitBox uses the Breez SDK and Spark to provide Lightning payments without requiring users to run nodes, open channels or manage liquidity.
The Lightning balance remains a hot wallet, while larger Bitcoin holdings can stay protected by the BitBox hardware wallet.
The feature is part of BitBox’s September 2026 Meggen update and is available through the updated BitBoxApp.
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin price was $75,800.44.
