Algorand targets quantum-resistant upgrades by 2027
- Algorand (CRYPTO:ALGO) plans to introduce quantum-resistant accounts and consensus upgrades by the end of 2027.
- The blockchain aims to address concerns that future quantum computers could break existing cryptographic systems used across digital networks.
- The roadmap includes Falcon-based accounts and updates to consensus participation mechanisms designed to improve long-term security.
Algorand (CRYPTO:ALGO) unveiled a roadmap to implement quantum-resistant infrastructure by the end of 2027, aiming to protect the blockchain against future advances in quantum computing.
The plan comes as governments, technology companies, and blockchain developers increase preparations for a future in which quantum computers may be capable of breaking widely used cryptographic systems.
“Governments, standards bodies, and security experts around the world are already preparing for a future where quantum computers may break many of the cryptographic systems that protect today's digital infrastructure,” said Algorand Foundation Chief Technology Officer Bruno Martins.
Martins said the roadmap includes new blockchain accounts based on Algorand's Falcon signature scheme, which was designed using quantum-resistant cryptography, alongside updates to the network's consensus mechanisms.
The foundation also plans to modify how consensus participants operate and is researching a hybrid model that combines traditional and quantum-resistant signatures, and following the announcement no market reaction for Algorand was disclosed.
The move follows growing attention on quantum computing risks after researchers suggested future quantum systems may require fewer resources than previously expected to break cryptographic protections used by blockchain networks.
Other blockchain projects including Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH), Solana (CRYPTO:SOL), Tezos (CRYPTO:XTZ), and Circle's Arc network have also announced research or development efforts focused on improving quantum resilience as governments and industry groups work towards quantum-safe standards before 2030.
At the time of reporting, Algorand price was $0.09393.
