47 Ronin director gets 30 months over crypto fraud
- Film director Carl Rinsch was sentenced to 30 months in prison for defrauding Netflix of US$11 million intended for a television series.
- Prosecutors said Rinsch used the funds to trade stocks and buy Dogecoin (CRYPTO:DOGE), later spending millions on luxury goods and legal fees.
- The case concludes a long-running fraud prosecution and highlights the legal risks of misusing investor or corporate funds for speculative trading.
Film director Carl Rinsch was sentenced to 30 months in prison after a US court found he fraudulently diverted US$11 million from Netflix that had been provided to complete a television series.
Prosecutors said Netflix had already invested US$44 million in the project before transferring an additional US$11 million in March 2020, which Rinsch was accused of using for personal trading instead of production.
“Rinsch orchestrated a scheme to steal millions by seeking US$11 million from a subscription streaming service, falsely claiming that money would be used to finance a television show that he was creating,” said Manhattan US Attorney Jay Clayton.
Court documents showed Rinsch lost about half of US$10.5 million through stock options before transferring more than US$4 million to cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, where he bought Dogecoin (CRYPTO:DOGE) that later generated about US$27 million, according to prosecutors, before spending roughly US$10 million on luxury vehicles, furniture, watches, clothing, legal fees and credit card bills.
Rinsch was also sentenced to three years of supervised release, ordered to forfeit US$11 million and pay US$700 in mandatory assessments, while no Netflix production was completed or returned, and following the announcement there was no market reaction because the case did not involve a listed company.
Rinsch, who directed the 2013 film 47 Ronin, was arrested in March 2025 and was later convicted on one count each of wire fraud and money laundering, along with five counts of engaging in monetary transactions involving unlawfully obtained property.
Prosecutors had sought a five-year prison sentence, while Rinsch's legal team argued for no prison term, citing mental health issues, and the court ultimately imposed a sentence well below the combined statutory maximum penalties for the offences.
