A major fire at Viva Energy's (ASX:VEA) Geelong refinery has been extinguished following a massive overnight operation, with initial findings pointing to equipment failure as the primary cause.
Fire Rescue Victoria declared the scene under control at 12:04 pm AEST today after crews had been battling the blaze since late April 15 night.
While Energy Minister Chris Bowen warned of potential impacts on petrol production, Viva Energy confirmed that diesel and petrol output continues at a reduced capacity for safety reasons.
A joint investigation involving FRV, WorkSafe, and Victoria Police is now underway to determine the exact circumstances of the failure, as firefighters remain on-site to monitor the cooling process.
At the time of reporting, Viva Energy's share price was $2.53.
