  • The Australian government appointed Therese McCarthy Hockey and David Bradbury as new joint deputy chairs of the prudential regulator.
  • The appointments will fill senior leadership roles at the agency for a five-year term.
  • The new leaders will split industry oversight across banking and superannuation to manage emerging financial and geopolitical risks.

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority welcomed the federal Treasurer's announcement appointing two new joint Deputy Chairs to five-year terms to lead the financial regulator.

The decision introduces new leadership to the board after recent shifts in regulatory oversight across Australia's banking and superannuation sectors.

"The Treasurer’s appointments provide a strong and capable board of APRA Members to protect Australian depositors, insurance policy holders and superannuation members," said APRA Chair John Lonsdale.

Under the new structure, McCarthy Hockey will oversee banking activities from July 9, while Bradbury will manage the superannuation industry starting 1 September 2026.

The agency stated that these appointments aim to maintain the safety of the local financial system amid a volatile global economic environment.

Following the announcement the APRA share price was unchanged at $0.00.

The regulator supervises institutions holding over $9 trillion in assets for Australian depositors, policyholders, and superannuation fund members.

Over the past year, the agency has focused heavily on strengthening cyber resilience, reviewing capital frameworks, and monitoring liquidity risks across the domestic banking sector.
