Origin Energy (ASX:ORG) confirmed that a recent cyber incident accessed personal data from approximately 900,000 current and former customers.
The retailer initially reviewed a security threat in early July before new information triggered immediate action on July 22.
"We are working with cybersecurity and forensic specialists to ensure the incident is contained, and we’ve taken a number of steps to secure our systems," said Origin Energy CEO Frank Calabria.
The compromised records included customer names, physical addresses, contact details, and partial credit card or bank account numbers.
Following the announcement, the Origin Energy share price was down at $10.50.
Credit rating agency Moody's stated that the breach is credit negative due to elevated regulatory scrutiny and customer remediation costs.
Moody's confirmed that the incident has not caused an immediate downgrade to the credit rating of the company.
