OpenAI Australian breach review finalised in weeks

Government Services Minister Katy Gallagher stated that a forensic investigation into OpenAI accessing a Services Australia portal without authorisation will be finalised in a matter of weeks.
The enquiry follows a June breach of the Medicare statistics website that went unnoticed by officials until the technology company sent an email notification on Sept. 10.
“I expect the forensic investigation to be finished within a matter of weeks, no longer than that,” said Government Services Minister Katy Gallagher.
The probe will assess security failures while the government transitions from daily mailbox checks to continuous monitoring after receiving the initial alert via a public researcher address.
Following the announcement, the Australian government reported its final 2025–26 budget cash balance at a deficit of $22.3 billion, representing a $6 billion improvement over previous forecasts.
The revised figures reflect stronger tax receipts from business operations, investment earnings, and superannuation funds.
The Australian Signals Directorate and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet continue to review artificial intelligence security protocols across federal systems.
