Novo Nordisk targets Australia for Wegovy weight loss pill
- Novo Nordisk announced that Australia is a high-priority market for its new oral Wegovy weight-loss medication.
- The announcement follows a UK commercial launch this week and could impact a local market where consumers pay up to $600 monthly.
- The company aims to expand its global consumer base by targeting patients who prefer oral medications over existing injectable options.
Novo Nordisk (NYSE:NVO) has identified Australia as a priority market for its new oral Wegovy weight-loss pill, aiming to target a local sector where an estimated 500,000 citizens use monthly injectables.
The planned rollout follows the official commercial launch of the oral treatment in the United Kingdom this week, expanding on the injectable versions that first became widely available to consumers in 2021.
“Australia is a prioritised market for Novo Nordisk globally,” said Novo Nordisk General Manager for Oceania Michael Azrak.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration has been evaluating the medication since March, with local private patients currently spending up to $600 per month on refrigerated injectable alternatives.
Following the announcement, the Novo Nordisk share price was down at $48.45.
The corporate push into oral alternatives comes as competing drugmakers like Eli Lilly make global regulatory submissions for their own oral treatments in more than 40 countries.
The Federal Government continues to restrict weight-loss medicine subsidies on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme to type 2 diabetes treatments due to high projected taxpayer costs.
