Northern Star adds former Perseus Mining boss to board
- Gold miner Northern Star Resources has appointed mining veteran Jeff Quartermaine to its board.
- The appointment comes as activist hedge fund Elliott Investment Management builds a 4% stake.
- The company aims to strengthen its leadership during an upcoming CEO transition.
Northern Star Resources (ASX:NST) appointed former Perseus Mining (ASX:PRU) Managing Director and CEO Jeff Quartermaine to its board following a $1 billion intervention by an activist investor.
US hedge fund Elliott Investment Management recently acquired a 4% stake and demanded a major strategic overhaul.
"Jeff is a highly regarded mining executive who joins us", said Northern Star Outgoing Chair Michael Chaney.
New CEO Suresh Vadnagra will assume leadership on Oct. 5 following three production downgrades since last year.
Following the announcement, the Northern Star share price was unchanged at $15.
The management transition coincides with the scheduled completion of the Kalgoorlie Super Pit mill expansion this quarter.
Outgoing chairman Michael Chaney recently rejected proposals from Elliott to launch a formal sale process for the business.
