Metro Mining bounces back with May shipping surge
Metro Mining (ASX:MMI) reported an operational rebound at its Bauxite Hills Mine in Cape York, North Queensland, following a challenging start to the year.
The company shipped 604,000 wet metric tonnes of bauxite in May, marking a substantial 45% increase compared to April.
The strong month-on-month surge was primarily driven by the return of the offshore floating terminal Ikamba from its statutory dry dock.
Despite completing recommissioning activities and operating on a single crane whilst replacing a luffing cylinder, the Ikamba significantly boosted shipping throughput.
The recovery helped offset weather disruptions and an eight-day unplanned breakdown of the TSA Skardon floating crane barge.
While year-to-date shipments of 1.12 million WMT sit 5% below the same period in 2025 due to Tropical Cyclone Narelle, Metro Mining has successfully restored the Skardon River channel to its planned operating depth using advanced bed-levelling techniques.
Furthermore, mining operations achieved a record May year-to-date stripping result of 615,409 bank cubic metres—a 165% increase on 2025 levels—which has exposed vital ore to support the forward mine plan.
The company expects throughput to be heavily weighted towards the second half of the year, maintaining its full-year shipment guidance of 6.6 to 7.1 million WMT.
