Imugene doses first azer-cel combination patient
Australian clinical-stage immuno-oncology company Imugene (ASX:IMU) announced a milestone in its ongoing Phase 1b basket study of azer-cel, dosing the first patient in its Bruton Tyrosine Kinase inhibitor combination cohort.
The pioneering treatment was administered at the prestigious Baylor University in Waco, Texas, to a patient suffering from mantle cell lymphoma who had previously failed standard BTKi therapy.
Azer-cel is an innovative, "off-the-shelf" allogeneic CAR T-cell therapy designed to target advanced blood cancers with massive unmet medical needs.
The specific third cohort is evaluating whether concurrent dosing of azer-cel alongside a BTKi can enhance therapeutic activity, safety, and preliminary efficacy.
While BTKi therapies represent an established standard of care for various B-cell malignancies—including follicular lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, and MCL—many patients eventually develop resistance or intolerance to the treatment.
The trial aims to overcome those hurdles, tapping into a global BTKi market that reached approximately US$12 billion in 2025.
By combining the therapies, researchers hope to provide a powerful new avenue for patients facing limited options.
Enrolment for the clinical study remains highly active, with patient recruitment currently expanding across ten specialised sites in the United States and five clinical sites throughout Australia.
At the time of reporting, Imugene’s share price was $0.11.
