Hazer secures key hydrogen patent in Japan

Share

Clean technology developer Hazer Group (ASX:HZR) has secured a patent from the Japanese Patent Office, bolstering the intellectual property protection of its proprietary Hazer Process in Japan.

The newly granted patent (JP 2023-122178), accepted in May, broadens the company's coverage beyond standard methane or natural gas-driven hydrogen production using an iron oxide catalyst to incorporate additional key proprietary attributes of its technology.

This reinforces Hazer's global IP portfolio, which now stands at approximately 100 patents and pending applications across core technology families, including advanced reactor designs.

Japan represents an essential commercial market for Hazer due to its high structural reliance on natural gas and constrained domestic capacity for carbon capture and storage.

The macroeconomic environment creates a strong business case for Hazer's methane pyrolysis technology, enabling the region's heavy industry sector to decarbonise effectively by utilising existing supply chains and infrastructure.

The expanded patent protection arrives at a critical juncture as the company advances several commercial initiatives in the region.

Hazer currently maintains an active commercial project with Chubu Electric and Chiyoda Corporation, alongside a partnership with Mitsui for graphite market development.

Hazer CEO and Managing Director Glenn Corrie emphasised that securing the IP protection ensures the company maintains its international position in producing low-cost clean hydrogen and high-value graphitic carbon.

At the time of reporting, Hazer Group's share price was $0.38.
