Australia's sovereign wealth fund has delivered an 11.7% return for the year ended March 31, navigating a landscape of shifting market sentiments and heightened geopolitical friction.

According to the latest figures, the Future Fund's disciplined strategy has pushed total assets managed by the Board of Guardians to a record $337.2 billion.

The annual performance bolsters a stellar decade of growth, with 10-year returns averaging 8.6%—outpacing the federal government’s 7.1% mandate target.

The fund’s resilience is underpinned by a strategic allocation favouring global developed market equities (28.8%), followed by alternatives (15.3%) and private equity (12.7%).

Domestically, Australian equities represent 10.7% of the portfolio.

Beyond the core fund, the Medical Research Future Fund climbed to $25.4 billion following an 8.7% annual return, while the Housing Australia Future Fund reached $11.5 billion after gaining 9.7% over the same period.

CEO Raphael Arndt noted that while inflation concerns—exacerbated by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz—pressured broader markets during the March quarter, the fund’s "neutral risk position" and defensive resilience measures provided a crucial buffer.

Chair Greg Combet previously warned that the primary challenge for the coming decade lies in managing the escalating risks of geopolitical conflict.

Despite these "stagflationary" global pressures, the Future Fund continues to demonstrate its capacity to protect and grow national wealth through sophisticated diversification and long-term positioning.
