Fire hits Greenbushes lithium plant, guidance maintained
A fire broke out at the Greenbushes lithium operation in Western Australia on June 9, prompting an official investigation but causing no injuries or disruptions to overall production guidance.
Australian miner IGO (ASX:IGO) confirmed the incident in a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange on June 10, noting that the blaze occurred at the site's Chemical Grade Plant 3 facility.
The fire was swiftly extinguished, and all personnel were accounted for safely.
The Greenbushes operation, widely recognised as the world's largest hard-rock lithium mine, is managed by Talison Lithium—a joint venture between IGO, China’s Tianqi Lithium, and US-based Albemarle.
According to IGO, the site's other two processing facilities, CGP1 and CGP2, were entirely unaffected by the event and continue to operate normally.
The company reassured investors that the broader operation remains firmly on track to meet its annual production guidance.
Talison Lithium has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
The joint venture partners are also currently undertaking a thorough assessment to determine the extent of the damage and establish the timeline and cost of the required repairs.
Despite the setback at the CGP3 facility, the quick containment of the fire has minimised potential fallout for the high-profile critical minerals project.
