  • The government stated that the changes aim to reduce regulatory costs while maintaining financial stability.

Australia’s Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino announced reforms aimed at cutting $780 million a year in red tape across Australia's financial services sector.

The package includes streamlined reporting requirements for smaller banks, higher covered bond issuance caps, and raised withdrawal limits for deceased estate expenses.

"These reforms respond directly to industry feedback and aim to reduce unnecessary compliance costs without compromising financial stability," said Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino.

The federal government stated that increasing the covered bond cap will provide Australian banks with greater access to stable and diversified funding sources.

Following the announcement, the government intends to begin implementing the reforms later this year.

The planned changes also involve remaking banking regulations due to expire on April 1, 2027, to ensure they remain fit for purpose.

The broader regulatory update follows ongoing industry consultations regarding compliance burdens within the national financial services framework.
