EnergyAustralia admits breaching electricity code rules

EnergyAustralia admitted it breached the Electricity Retail Code by failing to launch a mandatory solar sharer offer on July 1.

The retailer missed the statutory deadline that required eligible households in New South Wales, South Australia, and South East Queensland to receive access to three hours of free daily electricity.

"EnergyAustralia's delay in offering the plan initially denied current and prospective consumers the opportunity to access this plan and take advantage of the benefits available," said ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey.

The company subsequently made the solar sharer offer available to consumers on Aug. 3 alongside a court-enforceable undertaking given to regulators.

EnergyAustralia stated it will continue offering the solar Sharer plan while reporting compliance metrics and training customer service staff.

The business operates as a major electricity retailer supplying residential and small business customers across multiple Australian regions under mandatory federal codes.

Regulators previously required the integration of the three-hour free usage period to align with peak solar generation windows running between 11am and 3pm local time.
