Electrified vehicles claim 46% of Aussie May sales
New data revealed that electrified vehicles captured 46% of all new car sales in Australia in May.
According to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, battery electric vehicles secured a 20% market share, despite overall monthly vehicle sales dipping 4.8% year-on-year to 100,206 units.

The shift away from traditional internal combustion engines is most pronounced in the dominant SUV segment, where EV sales surged 167% and plug-in hybrids skyrocketed 377%, contrasting sharply with a 31% drop for petrol SUVs and a 41% plunge for diesel variants.
FCAI CEO Tony Weber attributed this rapid adoption of low-emission technology to the recently introduced New Vehicle Efficiency Standard, which has prompted manufacturers to increase local supply.

While Toyota maintained its market lead with 16,342 sales, emerging electric brands achieved exponential growth, led by BYD at 155%, Geely at 416%, and Omoda Jaecoo at 729%.
However, the unprecedented volume is placing severe strain on the national grid and charging networks.
Echoing recent findings from a Victorian parliamentary enquiry, Weber warned that regulatory stability and accelerated investment in public charging infrastructure are now critical.
