Council warns frontier AI heightens cyber risks
- The Council of Financial Regulators warned that frontier AI models are compounding cyber risks for Australian financial institutions.
- The warning follows coordination with national security agencies and a separate global alert from the Five Eyes alliance.
- Regulators urged financial institutions to immediately strengthen cyber defences and establish robust crisis contingency plans.
The Council of Financial Regulators stated that the development of frontier artificial intelligence models represents a step change in the threat landscape, intensifying cyber risks for Australian financial institutions.
This alert contrasts with previous baseline assessments and comes as member regulators APRA and ASIC recently advised banks, super funds, and insurers that their current defences are inadequate.
“The council observed that the development of frontier AI models represented a step change in the threat landscape for the financial system and has intensified cyber risk for financial institutions,” the CFR stated in its quarterly release.
To address these vulnerabilities, the council convened briefings with the Australian Signals Directorate and Home Affairs to coordinate incident responses and discuss accelerated software patching.
The Five Eyes security alliance separately urged businesses to treat these rapidly evolving AI capabilities as a core leadership responsibility rather than a standard IT issue.
The CFR instructed institutions to build out clear backup payment arrangements and communication protocols to prepare for potential systemic disruptions.
Following the announcement, Australian financial sector oversight remains heightened as agencies monitor compliance with the new cybersecurity baselines.
