Chemist Warehouse to expand into United Kingdom
Australian retail giant Sigma Healthcare (ASX:SIG) announced its foray into the United Kingdom, securing a majority stake in the London-based Greenlight Healthcare chain.
The strategic acquisition marks a milestone for the Chemist Warehouse brand, which is set to debut in the British market following a 75% buy-in of the 22-store network.
Under the new agreement, Greenlight Healthcare—formerly a purely employee-owned entity—will license the iconic Chemist Warehouse branding while maintaining responsibility for dispensary services and back-office operations.
Sigma CEO Vikesh Ramsunder, who is slated to detail the expansion at the Macquarie Australia conference on May 5, emphasised that international growth remains a pillar of the company’s long-term strategy.
Ramsunder previously suggested that the brand's global footprint could eventually surpass its domestic presence.
The move comes as Sigma reports robust performance across its existing international territories, including New Zealand, Ireland, and Dubai, where sales have surged by nearly 25%.
Domestically, the group has seen a 16.7% rise in sales, bolstered significantly by the soaring demand for GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic.
While Greenlight reported a pre-tax loss of £1.1 million in its latest accounts, Sigma intends to revitalise the network, starting with the rebranding of five initial pilot stores.
