Chalmers seeks urgent ACCC powers amid oil crisis

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has called for "essential" new powers for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to combat a rapidly escalating global oil shock triggered by the deepening Middle East crisis.

In a letter to state and territory counterparts on May 7, Chalmers warned that current prohibitions within the Competition and Consumer Act are "not appropriately adapted" to the fast-evolving, economy-wide shocks currently threatening Australia’s energy sovereignty.

The proposed reforms seek to lower the threshold for triggering emergency ACCC authorisations, bypassing the standard three-month consultation period.

Under the plan, the Treasurer could fast-track exemptions for businesses to coordinate supply and "unlock bottlenecks" if a threat to the national economy is deemed imminent.

The legislative push follows Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's recent announcement of a $10 billion fuel and fertiliser security package, as the nation remains at Stage 2 of the National Fuel Security Plan.

While the Prime Minister maintains that Australia is "faring well" for now, the government is bracing for a potential shift to Stage 3, which would necessitate the prioritisation of fuel for critical sectors and the release of strategic reserves.

With Brent crude prices swinging wildly as high as US$119 a barrel amid the conflict in Iran, Chalmers stressed that "quick and decisive" action is required to mitigate inflationary pressures that are already "turbocharging" costs for Australian households and small businesses.
