The Australian Government has confirmed the procurement of an additional 200 million litres of diesel fuel from international markets.

The latest acquisition, announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on April 22, brings the total volume of emergency fuel secured within the past week to approximately 300 million litres—the equivalent of more than 1.8 million barrels.

The intervention arrives as geopolitical instability in the Middle East continues to exert upward pressure on domestic fuel costs.

With petrol prices across the country surging since late February, the Commonwealth has formalised partnerships with industry titans BP Australia and Viva Energy (ASX:VEA) to ensure the nation’s transport and logistics networks remain operational.

Further negotiations are reportedly underway with Ampol, Park Fuels, and IOR to lock in additional shipments over the coming weeks.

Beyond the bowser, the government is shifting its focus towards primary producers. Officials are currently collaborating with major fertiliser suppliers, including Incitec Pivot and CSBP, to guarantee supply chains ahead of the critical winter planting season.

The coordination aims to shield the agricultural sector from global market volatility that threatens to disrupt local crop yields.

"As conflict in the Middle East and global volatility continue, we are working to shield Australians from the worst of the impacts," Prime Minister Albanese stated.

By diversifying supply routes and securing these substantial reserves, the administration seeks to stabilise the domestic economy against an increasingly unpredictable international energy landscape.
