BYD recalls 32,000 Shark 6 vehicles in Australia

Chinese automaker BYD issued an urgent safety recall for over 32,000 Shark 6 vehicles in Australia due to a defect in the under-car spare wheel storage system.

The recall impacts vehicles manufactured between August 2024 and June 2026 after drivers reported spare tyres detaching or loosening while driving.

"In certain circumstances, incorrect installation of the spare wheel, incorrect positioning of the spare wheel tray or insufficient fastening torque may cause abnormal wear of the spare wheel support cable," said BYD spokesperson Jane Doe.

The company stated that the abnormal cable wear could cause the spare wheel to fall off the vehicle and potentially create a road hazard.

In April, the company became Australia's second most popular car brand based on total units sold, trailing only Toyota.

The Shark 6 model also recorded the highest search volume among utility vehicles in Australia during 2026, surpassing long-standing competitors like the Toyota Hilux.
