Biome launches international BMB18 probiotic clinical trial

Share

Biome Australia (ASX:BIO) has launched its multi-centre, international clinical trial for BMB18 (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, DSM 35214).

The milestone marks an expansion from a single-centre study to a collaborative international programme spanning two major academic sites: La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and Harokopio University of Athens in Greece.

The study utilises a rigorous three-arm, double-blind, placebo-controlled protocol designed to evaluate 240 participants over a six-week intervention period, followed by a two-week follow-up.

Researchers will test two distinct dosage levels of BMB18 against a placebo.

The trial is highly anticipated as BMB18 represents Biome's very first wholly proprietary probiotic strain.

All site agreements have been executed, ethics approvals are fully secured at both centres, and the clinical trial product has been manufactured, released, and successfully delivered.

Participant recruitment is commencing this week, aligning precisely with the Q4 FY26 timeline previously disclosed by the company on April 27.

The addition of the Athenian site brings substantial academic prestige to the study.

HUA is currently ranked second overall in Greece and claims the top spot nationally for research quality in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026.

The Greek arm of the trial will be led by the esteemed Professor George Moschonis, a professor of human nutrition at HUA.
