BHP (ASX:BHP) filed an environmental permit application to reopen its Chilean Cerro Colorado copper mine for US$1.5 billion.

The miner closed the asset in late 2023 following the expiration of its operational permits.

The expansion project outlines a planned operational extension of 20 years for the site.

BHP stated that the initiative could generate approximately 1,500 jobs during its construction phase.

Following the announcement, the BHP share price was down at $59.42.

Globally, copper demand is forecast to rise 70% between 2021 and 2050 amid broader electrification trends.

The company has operated the larger Escondida copper mine in Chile for more than 30 years.
