BHP nears historic Pilbara mining union deal

Share

BHP (ASX:BHP) is on the verge of finalising an enterprise bargaining agreement with the Australian Workers’ Union, potentially ending decades of union dormancy in the Pilbara.

The proposed deal covers approximately 1,600 workers at the conjoined Mining Area C and South Flank hubs—the crown jewels of BHP’s iron ore empire.

Spurred on by the Albanese Government’s pro-union industrial relations regime, the AWU dragged BHP to the negotiating table, seeking pay rises above inflation.

While exact details remain under wraps, BHP confirmed it is proposing fair employee benefits to guarantee industry-leading conditions.

AWU WA State Secretary Brad Gandy acknowledged the offer as a significant step forward, noting BHP has moved on guaranteed annual pay increases, dispute resolution, and formal classification structures.

However, Gandy cautioned that the offer "needs more work" before members vote it up.

The development comes amidst a growing wave of unionisation sweeping the Pilbara, highlighted by recent protected industrial action by the Electrical Trades Union at BHP sites—the first in over three decades.

BHP WA iron ore boss Tim Day described the company as being "in the thick" of union action. While Day emphasised that current negotiations are reasonable, he reiterated warnings that rising unionisation risks jeopardising Australia’s global competitiveness.

With Fortescue’s operations also in the AWU’s crosshairs, the impending BHP agreement represents a milestone that could redefine labour dynamics across the nation's premier export heartland.
