Australian vehicle sales rose 0.9% in September

Australia’s new vehicle market recorded 102,924 total sales in September, marking a 0.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025, according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

Battery electric vehicles represented 24.2% of all sales for the month, up significantly from the 11.3% share reported in September 2025.

"Australian motorists are embracing a broader range of powertrains, following greater model choice offered by manufacturers and growing competition," said FCAI Acting CEO Dianne O'Hara.

During the month, plug-in hybrid sales increased by 122.7% and hybrid sales grew by 20.7%, while traditional petrol sales dropped by 36.2% and diesel fell by 18.4%.

China served as the largest manufacturing origin for vehicles sold during the month, supplying 35.5% of the national market ahead of Japan at 22.5%.

Toyota Motor led all individual manufacturers with 17,682 total vehicle sales, followed by BYD with 8,191 units and Ford (NYSE:F) with 7,592 units.
