Australian vehicle market sees 100,939 August sales

Australia's new vehicle market recorded 100,939 VFACTS sales in August, marking a 0.4% increase compared to the same month last year, according to data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

The modest monthly gain kept year-to-date sales at 811,388 units, matching performance levels from the equivalent period in 2025.

"The sustained level of BEV sales, together with changing brand preferences, shows how quickly consumer choice and competition are reshaping Australia’s new-vehicle market," said FCAI CEO Tony Weber.

Across all sources, battery electric vehicle deliveries reached 27,089 units, while plug-in hybrids made up 10.5% of VFACTS figures, and conventional hybrids accounted for 18.5%.

Following the announcement, top market leader Toyota reported capturing 19.5% of August vehicle sales.

Chinese manufacturers secured five of the top ten brand spots, earning a combined 26.4% market share through 26,610 vehicle deliveries.

Models from BYD, GWM, MG, Geely, and Chery accounted for half of the ten highest-selling individual vehicles across the country during the month.
