Australian Tax Office provides relief for high fuel costs

  • The Australian Taxation Office has introduced a targeted support package for businesses impacted by elevated fuel costs.
  • Eligible companies can access flexible payment plans and penalty remissions to manage short-term cash flow pressures.
  • The agency stated that the measure aims to assist businesses unable to meet their immediate tax obligations due to supply chain disruptions.

The Australian Taxation Office has launched a targeted assistance framework providing eligible fuel-affected businesses with three months of tax relief.

This compliance intervention comes as elevated fuel prices create operational disruptions and working capital pressures for companies across the nation.

“We recognise the fuel situation may severely affect some businesses, disrupting business supplies and day-to-day operations and creating uncertainty and financial pressures,” said ATO Commissioner of Taxation Rob Heferen.

The relief measures include streamlined access to flexible payment arrangements with longer terms, no upfront payments, and general interest charge remissions.

The agency stated that it will monitor economic data to determine whether to extend or modify this specific administrative approach beyond the initial period.

Affected business operators and tax professionals can now assess eligibility and notify the regulator of their intention to vary instalments through online portals.
