Australian regulator sues Grill'd over greenwashing allegations
- The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission launched federal court proceedings against burger chain Grill’d.
- The regulator alleges that only 4% of Tuesday burger purchases actually qualified for advertised environmental donations.
- The case targets 26 separate advertisements and seeks financial penalties, declarations, and legal costs.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission sued Grill'd over an environmental campaign involving 5 million burger sales.
The regulator alleges that the company made false representations during promotions held between January 2021 and April 2024.
“We consider this to be a form of greenwashing,” said ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb.
Although the campaign promised a A$1 donation per burger, officials claim only 4% of purchases were actually eligible.
Following the announcement, the Grill'd share price was unchanged at A$0.00.
The legal case covers 26 advertisements across social media, digital channels, and inside physical restaurant locations.
Founded in 2004, the privately owned fast-food business operates more than 170 outlets across Australia.
