Australian household spending stalled in August

• Total Australian household spending remained flat in August after consecutive monthly gains in June and July.
• Reduced discretionary spending in recreation and culture offset a sharp increase in transport and fuel costs.
• Excluding fuel expenditure, total Australian household spending would have dropped by 0.3% during the month.

Australian household spending was unchanged in August following a 1.1% rise in July, though annual expenditure remained 6.8% higher than the same period last year.

The flat monthly performance followed consecutive gains in June and July as falling discretionary expenditure offset gains in essential transport costs.

"Recreation and culture spending saw the largest fall – down 1.4% – after months of higher spending associated with major sporting events," said ABS Head of Business Statistics Tom Lay.

Higher transport spending rose 2.3% during the month, driven by increased electric vehicle sales and an 8.1% jump in fuel spending following the full restoration of the federal fuel excise duty on Aug. 3.

Following the release of the retail data, market analysts noted that consumer demand continues to adjust to elevated living expenses across the country.

Experimental data produced by the ABS suggests that actual fuel sales volume declined by 0.5% in August, extending a 4.6% drop recorded in July.

The broader slowdown reflects declining monthly expenditure across clothing, footwear, food, health, and furniture categories as consumers pull back on non-essential purchases.
