Australia launches new financial innovation strategy
- The Australian federal government launched a new Financial Innovation Strategy to accelerate regulatory updates and encourage financial technology development.
- The framework will replace the current regulatory sandbox with a flexible model operated through ASIC relief powers.
- The initiative aims to address four primary sector bottlenecks identified in an independent review led by Maha El Dimachki.
The Australian Government launched a new Financial Innovation Strategy at the Intersekt 2026 conference in Melbourne.
This regulatory overhaul follows an independent review of the Enhanced Regulatory Sandbox that identified four key operational challenges.
“We need action, but we need coordinated action; we need to work together on concrete actions that will see the strategy come to life,” said Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino.
Under the updated approach, a new Financial Innovation Committee will coordinate multi-agency responses and manage targeted sandboxes across key focus areas like artificial intelligence and tokenised assets.
The government stated that the strategy is expected to help the financial services sector deploy advanced technologies to fight fraud, enhance cybersecurity, and build system resilience.
The report highlights that criminal actors are increasingly using advanced technologies against consumers, prompting a coordinated regulatory response.
