The Albanese government has escalated trade tensions by imposing punitive tariffs of up to 82% on Chinese hot-rolled coil steel, aimed at shielding domestic manufacturers from low-cost competition.

Industry Minister Tim Ayres formalised the duties on May 4 following an Anti-Dumping Commission investigation, which concluded that Chinese exports benefited from unfair government subsidies and were being "dumped" onto the Australian market at prices below their normal value.

The move follows an application from BlueScope Steel, the nation’s sole manufacturer of the product, which argued that systemic underselling by Chinese firms caused material injury to local industry.

Hot-rolled coil remains a vital component in Australian construction, car manufacturing, and appliance production.

While the government maintains these measures are consistent with World Trade Organisation obligations and essential for protecting Australian workers, Beijing has warned that the "abuse" of trade remedies threatens bilateral economic co-operation.

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy argued the levies would ultimately penalise Australian consumers and downstream industries.

Despite these concerns, Canberra continues to expand its "tariff wall", with additional levies recently placed on Chinese steel corner beads and several other active investigations underway.

The latest protectionist shift occurs as Treasurer Jim Chalmers directs the Productivity Commission to further scrutinise industry-wide dumping allegations.
