  • AUSTRAC is examining whether the company's global governance and monitoring systems can properly detect child sexual exploitation and terrorism financing risks.

Australia's financial crimes regulator launched an investigation into Western Union Financial Services and parent entity Western Union (NYSE:WU) due to concerns over high-risk payment channel management.

The regulatory probe follows a 2025 supervisory campaign into payment providers that uncovered significant operational weaknesses in managing money laundering and child sexual exploitation risks across the industry.

"We have launched this investigation because we have serious concerns that Western Union has failed to adequately manage those risks," said AUSTRAC CEO Brendan Thomas.

The investigation will specifically examine transaction monitoring systems, anti-money laundering programmes, counter-terrorism financing controls, and global oversight of local compliance obligations.

Following the announcement, the Western Union share price was down at $7.16.

AUSTRAC stated that the investigation focuses strictly on the core company structure rather than third-party affiliates.

The regulator confirmed it will defer any potential enforcement actions until the formal probe reaches a final conclusion.
