Higher education expenditure on research and development has undergone its most significant growth spurt in over a decade, according to new data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Total spending reached a record $16.4 billion in 2024, representing a 17% increase from 2022 levels—the highest biennial growth rate recorded since 2012.

The revitalisation was primarily anchored by a massive influx of funding into the health sector, with the health sciences faculty alone reporting a 37% rise to $574 million.

Biomedical and clinical sciences saw increases of 14% and 26%, respectively, while Indigenous studies recorded the highest percentage surge, jumping 54% to $140 million.

The financial uptick has had a direct impact on the academic workforce, contributing to a $1 billion rise in labour costs.

The ABS attributed this to universities expanding research activities, transitioning casual staff into permanent roles, and implementing the first major pay increases since the pandemic.

"This recovery was supported by the return of international students increasing university revenue streams", stated Tom Lay, ABS Head of Business Statistics.

For the first time since 2018, higher education R&D as a share of GDP has climbed, rising from 0.54% to 0.59%.

The shift signals a stabilising sector as Australian universities move past COVID-19 restrictions and return to more normal operations.
