Australia's unemployment rate fell to 4.1% in December 2025, seasonally adjusted, as employment rose by 65,000 people, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The increase was driven largely by full-time work, which grew by 55,000, while part-time employment rose by 10,000, with stronger gains among people aged 15 to 24.

ABS head of labour statistics Sean Crick said the rise in employment contributed to a slight lift in the participation rate to 66.7%, despite a 30,000 decline in the number of unemployed people.

Male employment accounted for most of the growth, increasing by 49,000, compared with a 17,000 rise in female employment.

Total hours worked increased by 0.4% to a record high of more than 2 billion hours, while underemployment and underutilisation also fell, pointing to continued strengthening in labour market conditions.
