Albanese creates new central office for artificial intelligence

  • Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the creation of a centralised Office of AI inside his department to manage national artificial intelligence policies.
  • The structural shift aims to fast-track approvals for data centres and coordinate safety and economic regulations across all government ministries.
  • The federal policy pivot seeks to address community pushback on data infrastructure while attempting to draw international investment into Australia.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the creation of a new Office of AI within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet to centralise the country's regulatory framework.

The policy shift moves Australia away from a sector-by-sector approach to managing artificial intelligence, following a period where the nation attracted $10 billion in data centre investment during 2024.

"But just as government developed co-ordinated approaches for other significant technologies – from civil aviation in the 1920s to genetics in the 1990s – we must do this with AI as well," said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The newly formed office will oversee the creation of unified Australian standards, targeting regulatory compliance speed and safety concerns such as the use of generative technologies by foreign state actors.

The government stated that delivering greater regulatory speed and clarity is expected to enhance Australia's appeal to international technology developers.

The implementation of the centralised oversight framework follows a record $6 billion tech sector investment in equipment and machinery during the March quarter.

The administrative restructuring occurs amid ongoing industry consultations regarding domestic copyright protections, data centre grid integration, and collaborative national security assessments within the Five Eyes alliance.
