AGL Energy breaks ground on $490M WA gas project

Share

AGL Energy (ASX:AGL) has broken ground on a $490 million gas-fired power station in Kwinana, a major development set to bolster the giant retailer’s West Coast electricity supply and reinforce security for Western Australia’s power grid.

The new 220-megawatt facility will be constructed alongside an existing generator, boosting the site's total capacity to 340 MW of rapid-start generation capable of delivering power on demand.

AGL CEO Damien Nicks highlighted the project as a significant step forward for the company and the broader transition to lower-carbon energy within the South West Interconnected System.

Nicks noted that the expansion will allow AGL to grow its Perth Energy retail business while diversifying its operations beyond the East Coast market.
