Oil prices rose after President Donald Trump threatened attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure, overshadowing his comments that a deal to end hostilities in the Middle East could be close.  West Texas Intermediate futures rose more than 3% to trade near $103 a barrel, while the most active June Brent futures climbed to trade above $107 a barrel.  Brent futures were volatile amid thin liquidity, with traders increasingly staying on the sidelines to avoid extreme headline-driven price swings. Front-month May futures fluctuated as investors closed out those positions ahead of the contract's expiration on Tuesday the price was near $112 a barrel.

Michael Allen, a former White House adviser in the Bush administration, said Iran still appears to be in the hands of a hardliners which could mean a more drawn-out conflict and make striking a deal difficult.  US President Donald Trump repeated threats to destroy Iranian energy assets if the Strait of Hormuz isn't reopened soon, raising fears the war could escalate after more American troops arrived in the region. The US "is in serious discussions" with what he called a new regime in Iran to end military operations, Trump said in a social-media post on Monday. But if a deal isn't reached and Hormuz reopened, "we will conclude our lovely "stay" in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!)."

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says longer-term inflation expectations appear to be in check but that the central bank is carefully monitoring them as it assesses the effect from the US and Israel's war against Iran. He speaks during an event at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell said that it is too soon to know what kind of economic impact will come from war with Iran. Speaking at an event at Harvard University, Powell told students that the Fed's rate decisions really only have a meaningful impact on demand, not supply. Powell did say that the rise in oil prices is a supply shock that could impact inflation expectations and that has to be carefully monitored.

Speaking at a event at Harvard University Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell said that there's currently tension between the Fed's dual mandates as it aims to keep the labor market and inflation in check. Powell also said that he welcomes debate given the difficult landscape. Addressing the recent string of dissents, he said it would be 'misleading' to expect unanimity at this time.
