Qubic halts blockchain after weak-seed wallet attack
- Qubic halted its blockchain after an attacker exploited weak wallet seeds to drain cryptocurrency wallets.
- The incident exposed risks from predictable wallet credentials rather than necessarily indicating a flaw in the blockchain itself.
- The network pause gave the project time to assess the incident and consider recovery measures.
Qubic (QUBIC) halted its network after weak wallet seeds enabled attackers to drain 1,404 addresses, involving approximately 2.94 trillion QU.
The incident affected seeds generated through certain Apple-device browser combinations and older versions of Qubic’s iOS wallet.
“The funds are contained,” said Qubic Core team member joetom in the community incident update.
The network pause prevents the drained funds from moving while Qubic’s computors consider possible next steps.
The community update said seed generation had been fixed in version 4.26.4, with a detailed recovery guide to follow.
Of the drained funds, 379.04 billion QU reportedly reached a MEXC deposit address, where the exchange froze the account.
The remaining 2.56 trillion QU was reported across eight attacker wallets on the Qubic network, with no movement recorded after 01:26 UTC on 18 October.
Following the update, QUBIC was trading down 1.6% at $0.064541.
