L3Harris Technologies (NYSE:LHX) announced that it received an undefinitized contract from Lockheed Martin valued at more than $6 billion, excluding escalations, over seven years to expand propulsion production for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system.
The award follows an earlier framework agreement between L3Harris and the U.S. Department of War aimed at quadrupling THAAD propulsion production capacity.
The contract will support expanded manufacturing of THAAD Solid Rocket Boost Motors and increased production capacity for THAAD’s Liquid Divert and Attitude Control systems.
L3Harris said it will construct a new facility to support higher-volume THAAD propulsion manufacturing and continue investing across its propulsion portfolio.
The company noted that the THAAD propulsion award, together with a recently announced PAC-3 MSE propulsion contract, aligns with previously communicated expectations for both missile defense programs.
THAAD is a missile defense system designed to intercept short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missile threats both inside and outside Earth’s atmosphere.
L3Harris said the system has achieved a 100% intercept success rate in flight tests since
